What Makes A Good First Date?

What makes a first date fun? While there are many factors affecting what you and your date will define as "fun," there are some universal dating rules that will affect your, your date's (and your friends') perception of your first date.

Bad signs include being late, poorly or inappropriately dressed, or rude. If your date is putting his or her best foot forward, that's a good sign. If he or she doesn't care enough to clean up and use their company manners, the rest of the night will probably not be fun.

What you do on your outing will really not matter so much as if you get the chance to know one another. So in this "getting to know each other" phase, movies are not so good. You can't talk. Dinner, mini golf, a corn maze, walking along a boardwalk, going on a picnic and going to a museum are all decent ideas. You have the chance to talk an interact when doing these things. Bars, concerts and monster car rallies all make poor outings as you can't talk easily.

Dinner sometimes makes people nervous. if this is true for you, or your date, fall back on something more playful. Bowling or another informal sport can be a fun first date activity. A carnival or street fair can provide something fun to do and give you things to talk about as well.

What kind of conversation you have will probably determine if you have a good time. Discussing politics and religion is generally thought of as a bad idea. Getting into the abortion debate on a date would not be fun. On the other hand, if you get into the "deep" subjects and you agree, you may have found some great common ground.

Dating is complicated. Everyone has different goals for it. If you and the person you are seeing's goals for relationships line up, you have a great start. However, if one of you is looking for marriage and the other is looking for a one night stand, you are probably not going to go home happy at the end of the night. It's best to get some of this info out as soon as possible. I am not talking about proposing marriage or anything creepy like that, just being open about what you want out of relationships and life before anyone is too vested in the relationship.

This doesn't mean that you have to say yes or no to relationships in general, or the possibility of a relationship with this person specifically, on a first date just that if one of you will be joining the military or going to a graduate school in a distant city soon, it's good to know that. If the graduate school is in a city you've always wanted to visit, it's good to know that, too.

So, what makes a first date fun is mostly up to the people who are out on that date but good manners, a chance to chat, and an activity that would be fun even if it was with a friend rather than a date usually make for a good time. A first date doesn't have to be love at first sight or the best restaurant in town to be fun!
