If you own a car that is out of warranty - perhaps you bought an older model to save on car insurance bills - then servicing and repairs are your responsibility. Garage bills can be expensive, so it is crucial to make sure you're not paying more than you have to. Here's how to ensure you find a reputable mechanic that will fix your vehicle at a reasonable price.

Can you choose your mechanic?

The first thing to note is that the choice of where to have your car repaired is not always open to you. If you are claiming for repairs on your motor insurance policy, in most cases you will have to take your car to a garage specified by your provider.

This may be less convenient than using your nearest mechanic - and it could take longer for repairs to be made - but it is probably a condition of your policy.

In some cases, your insurer will provide a courtesy car to tide you over until your own vehicle is road-worthy again: but not all policies do this, so always check when you are shopping around for new cover.

Finding a garage

Recognising that drivers were becoming increasingly worried about falling victim to rip-off mechanics, the motor industry set up its own scheme to help consumers find a reputable garage, and to deal with any problems that arise.

The Motor Codes scheme has a website that helps motorists find affiliated garages in their area.

A survey by the body earlier this year found that 14 million people felt let down by their local garages.

To join the scheme, mechanics have to pay £75 and must then agree to abide by the rules of the Service and Repair Code and provide:

· Honest and fair services
· Open and transparent pricing
· Work completed as agreed
· Invoices that match quoted prices
· Competent and conscientious staff.

Garages must check with customers before starting any extra work that is deemed necessary; and there has to be a clear complaint procedure in place as well.

Your rights

According to Trading Standards, services and repairs are covered under the Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982 and the Sale and Supply of Goods to Consumers Regulations 2002. Under these laws you are entitled to expect that the work be carried out with reasonable care and skill, within a reasonable time at a reasonable charge. If a part is replaced, the new part should be of satisfactory quality, fit for the purpose and as described.

If you're not happy with the work

Trading Standards says that you should give a garage the chance to rectify any faults - but if they fail to do so, you are entitled to get the work done elsewhere and bill the first garage.

Bear in mind also that if you pay by credit card for any work costing £100 or more, you are covered for any disputes under the Consumer Credit Act, and will be able to recover losses from your card provider.

Some garages may charge an extra fee for paying by credit card - but this could be worthwhile given the added protection it offers.

If you have chosen a garage which is a part of a trade body, there should be a clear complaints procedure for you to follow, without having to resort straight away to expensive and time-consuming legal action.

Members of the Motor Codes scheme, for example, offer customers several levels of dispute resolution: any matters not resolved by the firm's own customer services can be taken to the Code's Customer Advice Line, and from there to a Conciliation Service and finally an Arbitration Service.

These bodies may not be legally binding, but any garage that refuses to comply with their findings risks being kicked out of the Code, and is likely to lose business as a result.

When Is It Time To Call A Plumber?

A plumber is a professional that works on the pipes in your home. In actuality, there are several pipe systems in a normal home. The water supply system brings clean water into the home. The drain system removes used water and waste from the home. If your home uses natural gas, propane or oil for heating, these fuels are also piped into the home. Homes using steam for heat may also have a system of pipes that move the steam from the boiler to the various radiators to provide the heat you need.

When the drain system becomes plugged, it is possible that raw sewage could back up in the home. Overflowing drains can create a health hazard as well as a big mess. It is important that you keep the drains open in the home to prevent such a backup that could lead to the formation of mold in the home and spread germs.

Most home plumbing systems are pretty much worry free. There are times that preventative maintenance can keep these systems working well. For example, replacing the rubber washers on the taps of the fresh water system can prevents drips which are responsible for wasting of millions of gallons of treated water around the world every day.

Leaking gas systems can be very dangerous. The leaking gas can build up in a home causing an explosive situation. The gas needs to be turned off at the meter immediately and ventilation should be used to clear the home of the fumes. These fumes may cause asphyxiation as well as explosion. The plumber is equipped to find and repair the leak.

Specially trained plumbing professionals called boilermakers work on the steam pipes in a home. If you have leaking steam pipes, be sure that they are repaired as quickly as possible so that no one gets a nasty steam burn.

When one of the plumbing systems in your home does not work as it should, the plumber is able to make the correct repairs. Preventative maintenance ensures that the systems continue to provide great service.

If you have a swimming pool in your house, bear in mind that it is not all fun to have them around. True that it offers a different level of enjoyment to everyone, but when it gets all dirt-filled, it wouldn't be as fun anymore to swim on them. Imagine simmering yourself on some algae-full glossy water or fallen leaves floating along with your swim; that isn't a good sensation at all. That is why it is important to periodically clean your pool from time to time.

Although, that the task at hand when cleaning the pool can be quite handy because of its size, it doesn't necessarily follow that it can't be done. You just need to invest a little on some materials you would utilize in maintaining your pool periodically. Don't worry, they are worth-it investments hence you will be using them in the long run.

There are a lot of pool cleaning tools you can make use that are cheap and are readily available. You can have these ones instead of going for those really huge ones. Although bigger ones are relatively more efficient because they would probably entail more comprehensive automated mechanisms. But sometimes the best way to go is to use the practical ones. These practical tools would include your skimming net, pool brush and vacuum.

Once you have them all, you can then begin your task:

If there are a lot trees overlooking your pool or plants nearby it, it would be natural that they might invade the pool waters as well. Use your skimming net to pick-up and sift those floating leaves in the water. Be sure to have a garbage can, or any waste containers near you so that it would be easier to keep all the leaves in one place after you sift them up. Keep going until you can now clearly see the water free from floating leaves.

The presence of stagnant water often entails the eventual process of algae infestation. That's why you practically see green stuff afloat the water that has not been replaced. Same goes as well with your pool if you forget to change the water in it from time to time. Change the water in your pool periodically. Also when you empty your pool, make it a point to clean the floor and the walls with a pool brush to rid of glossiness caused by accumulated algae.

In order to clean the water from any debris, the use of pool vacuums is necessary. Vacuums will siphon all the water from your pool to be filtered off from dirt and any debris. Do this every week to maintain the well-being of your pool.

Apart from the vacuum of course, your pool has default mechanisms in filtering dirt and preventing them from clogging your drain. Filters do this job for you; but you must not be negligent over them. Filters get full and they might eventually clog then stagnate you water resulting to dirt build-up. It is important to routinely clean the filters of your pool. Do this every time you are overhauling the pool, when the water is drained.

Bacteria are most likely the immediate cause why your pool will turn into unviable recreational areas. Usually the cause of bacteria build-up is the irresponsibility of the pool owner to have proper maintenance in their pool.

Pool maintenance isn't really that much of an arduous task if you are aware of certain tools that could help you with the task at hand. An example of this are the use of chemical based agents that could clean you pool in no time. Not only do they reinstate your crystal clear waters, it will further prevent harmful bacteria from living in your pool. Here are two of the most popularly used chemical procedures in cleaning the pool.

1.	Swimming Pool Shock

Pool Shocks are advisably to be used at least once a week. Especially when the pool is used quite too often within the time being, or after a heavy rain, and or during extended hot seasons like summer. Pool Shocking is simply "extremely chlorinating" your pool. Thias means that the chlorine content level of your pool is increased drastically to saturate the water with the chemical to ensure that all bacteria in it is eradicated. Every pool owner should have a basic knowledge about this method being one of the most commonly used treatment option.

2.	Algaecides

Because swimming pools have water, it is likely that it becomes a target to algae attacks, especially when the water in it stays unchanged for some time. When algae have inhabited your favourite recreational area, it will turn it into a slimy, slipper place with lots of green stuff afloat. Algaecides are the best solution to this problem. It will kill almost any type of algae inhabiting your pool. There are three types of algae that usually infest pool waters: The green, black and mustard algae. The green are obviously the green coloured ones that float in the center and the side-skirt of your pool. They are slimy characteristics and are the types that you dominantly see. Black algae on the other hand are ironically not coloured black. They are blue pigments that float along with the green algae but much smaller than the former. Mustard algae look like dirt and are often mistaken as one.

All of the chemical treatments mentioned above make use of chlorine to chemically treat your pool. It skyrockets the level of chlorine content in your pool to shock microorganisms infesting in it like algae and other bacteria. While they are effective in maintaining the well-being of your pool, it should be noted that they are chemically based and that they might pose certain health hazards to anyone. Safety precautions should always be prioritized when using them.

Air preheater is a self contained device for heating an enclosed area. It is also known as a room heater. Air heater is also available in portable form. The first electric air preheater was created in 1929. This air heater had a double safety design with an efficient thermostat and thermal fuse.

Selecting an ideal Malaysia air preheater products is not an easy job. There are limited ways of testing while buying an air heater at appliance store. Generally, a product demonstration isn't enough. An air heater can warm hand or something else in front of air heater quickly. However question is that, can it warm the entire room. There are some points to consider while buying an air heater.

First, see to it that the heating system in air preheater has high power capability. high-performance heaters can effectively circulate air across the entire operating space. When the heated air reaches across a good-sized room, it is more than likely the air in every space of that room can be heated to the specified temperature.

One way to find out if the air heater has a whole-room heating capacity is to verify the technology behind its circulation system. There are heaters from companies that specialize in ventilation systems, and this can tell you a good deal about their heating power.

Another thing to consider is the heater price in Malaysia. Warmth in cold weather has a price, but shouldn't necessarily be too expensive. A simplee air heater that has no extra decoration can have higher power capacity and still remain less expensive than most of the heaters. To make sensible decision in selecting an ideal air heater, think about the so-called extra options of the system. Generally, these extra options can significantly boost the heater price.

Air preheater is a perfect way of providing heat in winter. portable air heater offers instant heat whenever and wherever heat is needed. Air heater works by drawing in cold air from the surroundings and then passes the air over a heated element with the air preheater unit. The hot air is then passed out of the air heater into the room.

All air heaters are powered by electricity. It has some benefits over other heaters. Air preheater seems to be the most common option because it's inexpensive and easy to maintain.

Some of the benefits of an air preheater are obvious. Electrical energy is available anyplace, and electric heaters don't require any gas to be stored however the use of an air preheater is quite expensive as the price of electricity is getting higher in many of the nations worldwide.

It is very vital to know the safety issues while purchasing an air heater. New models of air heaters are required to pass some safety tests in order to ensure safe running. Automatic off and on control, wire grills, tilt switches and thermostat are all safety features which should be present in an air heater. Modern air preheater often has ceramic heating element rather than nichrome wires that were widely used in the past. These were fan forced with a blower or a squirrel cage fan.

Home Window Air Conditioners

Escaping summer heat madness is just a click away with the aid of an air conditioning unit. Imagine the comfort and relief you would get amidst the terrible hot weather outdoors. Majority of residential homeowners have preferred window air conditioning units over other types of air conditioners as its benefits and functions match up a typical family's cooling need and capability.

Owning a centralized air conditioning unit could be expensive to many, not to mention impractical if you only have 1 or 2 rooms at home. In case like this, one of the best options to consider is having a room air conditioner (also known as window air conditioning unit). As the name implies, these type of units are versatile and can easily be affixed to any windows when necessary. They cool down a room just when you need it, making them more cost-effective compare to central air conditioning units.

Prior to selecting your air conditioning unit, first determine the size of the room and your estimated budget on both purchasing and operating cost. If you like to cool down multiple rooms, then central units could be the best option. However, for a small house or space, central units could be an impractical choice. In this case, a window unit or a room air conditioner is more advisable. When shopping for your window air conditioning unit, you have to be aware about the suitable size and power in relation to the space you plan to cool down. The efficiency of your air conditioning unit will simply depend on these two basic factors. The cooling capacity of a window unit depends on room size that should be cooled down. Appropriate sizing is a requirement. When you purchased a smaller air conditioner, chances are, it will not decrease the room temperature efficiently especially during hot season. On the contrary, bigger window units will cool down the room fast but will fail to dehumidify the area. Not to mention, bigger units are costly in terms of purchasing, installation and operation as well.

Anyone who had used a window air conditioning unit would recognize how versatile these types of cooling equipments are. They are manageable in terms of weight, therefore, easily to attach and detach from a window depending on your room preference. If summer is over, you don't have to be reminded how you can easily pack away an air conditioning window unit.

Room air conditioners have been a popular choice for residential homes, for seasonal usage. They provide summer cooling needs just like what other types of air conditioner do. Not to mention, they cost less than other A/C units but as durable as the other type. In the end, air conditioning window unit provides an escape retreat with a cool and humidity free environment within your house every summer.

Some Useful Tips When It Comes To Polishing Granite Floors

Up market kitchens have used granite worktops for some time now and granite flooring has only been found in commercial buildings. Now granite as a flooring material is finding its way into more and more homes. The reasons for this are that granite is the hardest of the natural stone materials and is quite resistant to harmful chemicals and is very hard wearing.

Despite its hardness it is still capable of being scratched by quartz. Quartz is sand like material which makes up the biggest proportion of dirt brought into a building on the underside of footwear. Traffic going over this then moves the small particles of sand over the surface of the granite causing minute scratches. The scratching effect on granite will be much less than that on marble for instance but non-the-less it still scratches. This effect can be minimized by the correct maintenance programme. A typical maintenance programme for granite flooring would be to dust mop the floor each day to remove these particles of dirt and once or twice a week depending upon traffic wash the floor with stone soap. This reseals the floor and enhances the colour. This is then wet vacuumed up and the floor then washed with pure water which is also wet vacuumed up. This wet vacuuming prevents the possibility of water staining.

At frequent intervals which depends upon the number of people walking over the floor the granite should be treated with a crystallising chemical and then buffed using a high speed buffer. The intervals between these treatments could be as short as one week in a very busy commercial environment but in a domestic setting where shoes are probably not worn it could be a yearly event. This process helps to remove the majority of these small invisible scratches and brings back the shine. The next process should be carried out every 2 - 5 years in the home and every 6 months in commercial buildings. In this process a more abrasive chemical is used along with a slow buffer fitted with steel wool pads. This takes much longer but the effect is to remove all scratches and restore the granite floor to its almost mirror like, brilliant shiny surface.

If this maintenance programme is followed then this brilliant shine that granite flooring can produce will last you a lifetime with minimum costs.

Should you inherit a granite floor that has been neglected then this scratching will have built up to the point where the floor will be completely dull. Now if this was a marble floor it could be rectified relatively easily by diamond grinding. Diamond grinding of granite floors is not really a practical or realistic process. As granite is so hard it takes about 10 -20 times longer than the marble and very quickly consumes the diamond pads. So purely from a cost basis it is normally beyond most people's pockets. Also if it is required to regrind a granite floor and the client does not mind the exorbitant cost then they should be made aware that although the shine can be restored the actual colour of the granite may change quite dramatically. For example black granite can suddenly become very grey!

This regrinding process which for marble might take about 30 minutes per square meter for granite, being much harder takes about two to three hours to achieve any sort of shine.

In the processing plants marble is ground for about 40 minutes to achieve the high gloss effect. Granite on the other hand will be ground for several hours to achieve the same effect. There is no way that once the granite is in place this process can be replicated.

If you instigate a good maintenance programme along the lines outlined above then you will never be confronted with this problem and the costs will be minimal by comparison. Not only that you will have a floor that looks like a mirror all of the time! Should you happen to inherit a bad granite floor then even if a stone polisher offers to regrind decline and have it recrystallized instead. The effects will be equivalent at a much lower cost.

Chicago Janitorial Services - Tips for Carpet Cleaning

How chicago janitorial services can help your homes or businesses.

An unbeaten carpet care program commences previous to installation and than keep on with the regular vacuuming, maintenance, clean-up and episodic renovation efforts. It calls for utmost care to shield it against wear and tear and the other hazards of every day use.

Here are some implications for upholding the Chicago Janitorial Services:

1.	Vacuuming the carpet repeatedly with a strong suction, rotating brush and tight filter will decrease the soil buildup.

2.	Examine the carpet prior to scrubbing, extracting or spotting for the fact that some carpets are very sensitive to acid type cleaners and lose their color in a great extent while other carpets are sensitive to harsh alkalis.

3.	Do not apply strong spotting agents if not required and always neutralize high alkaline or high acid cleaners after use. Make use of appropriate spotters starting using the mildest.

4.	Brushing the spot isn't a solution for the cleaning. The correct technique to do away with the spot is to rub it towards the middle and then compressing into the cloth by means of brush or the other tamping devices.

5.	Increasing quantities beyond the suggested solution levels isn't going to boost the cleaning efficiency. It will result in residual left which will lead to a rapid re-soiling that thorough vacuuming also can't eradicate. So, take extreme care with the detergents.

6.	Since over wetting can cause brownout, adhesion difficulties and carpet shrinkage so take care not to make it over wet in a tremendous amount.

7.	After cleaning, please ensure your carpet is dried within twelve hours, otherwise mold or mildew might grow on them. Careful use of good ventilation, central heating and air conditioning systems will help the drying process.

8.	The ideal way to get a fresh Chocolate Milk spill out of the light colored carpets is to use a product entitled--Simple Green (It's non-toxic).

Your carpet will last for a length of time, if clean-up procedure is applied accurately. How frequently you clean up the carpet will depend on the weather and traffic. Generally, carpets in light traffic region should be cleaned once in a year; in normal traffic locations, once in six months and in heavy traffic areas almost definitely once in a month.
