Apartment residents live a more laid back and cost-effective lifestyle than most homeowners, but do not get to enjoy the sanctity of outdoor rooms. Creating an enjoyable outdoor space can easily be achieved by dressing it up with a small balcony garden.

Determining the angle and the amount of sunlight exposed to an outdoor area is important to creating a balcony garden. There are many different species of plants that require different ways to be taken care of; by not researching the amount of sunlight a plant needs, it can be hard to properly create a balcony garden. Placement of furniture and plants can be decided by the angle of the sun and provide an elegant atmosphere for enjoying the outdoors.

The easiest way many apartment owners create flower beds is by utilizing containers. Weight requirements for any balcony should be considered before creating an outdoor space. Start with a big container that you can use for a tall plant, then surround that with various sizes and shapes containing plants of various heights. Acknowledging the amount of wind the balcony is exposed to can prevent damage of a balcony or any items apart of the balcony.

Plants that will flow over the edges of the containers help to create the illusion of a garden, and of course you should choose flowering plants to add color. In order to create a successful vegetable garden on a balcony, become educated on proper care techniques, including the amount of sunlight needed for certain vegetables to survive.

Herb gardens and hanging plant holders add personality to a drab space in a balcony garden. Even if you don't use the herbs for cooking, the aroma can be very pleasant.

Enhancing intimacy can easily be achieved by growing vines over elegant trellises placed between neighboring territories. Be careful not to close out the sunlight, when enhancing privacy in a balcony garden

Increasing height and adding significance through hanging baskets is an easy way to dress up a balcony using little floor space. Hung from brackets on the walls, they fill a blank space, or from hooks around the perimeter to create an overhang. Although hanging plants can add edge to an outdoor space, if not placed properly it can block the sun from other plants in the balcony garden. They need to be watered carefully to avoid spillage, especially if they are round the edge of the balcony you don't want to drip water onto the balcony below. All the containers will need drainage trays and you will have to be vigilant when watering not to overfill the containers as any water spilt will stain the tiles.

Window boxes add color characteristics to a balcony if strategically and firmly placed. Don't forget to water window boxes with care.

Just because you live in an apartment does not mean you have to do without the beauty of plants and flowers. Time and effort can transform a plain balcony into a beautiful garden environment.

Organic gardening has numerous benefits. Organic gardening strengthens an environment by not utilizing harmful chemicals.

Increased attraction of birds, bugs and other species is prevalent in organic gardens. This does not mean that your plants should be dished up on a platter for insects to devour, but organic pesticides encourage the "good" bugs to thrive in your garden, as well as the insects that live on them.

Before creating an organic garden, cautiously get rid of all chemical garden products. Chemical insecticides and fertilizers are extremely toxic to humans and their pets and cannot be disposed of through common drainage systems. Check the label for disposal instructions, or contact your local waste disposal company for information on how to dispose of them properly. Check local stores for organic fertilizers, insecticides and pesticides. Also creating home remedies can save time and money. Natural ingredients help preserve the lives of wildlife and humans. Some insects are beneficial to the garden because they eat the insects that ravish your plants, so learn to recognize them and leave them alone.

Research which plants to place next to each other that encourage growth and reduce insects. Some plants may attract birds that feed on insects. Many herbs provide excellent pest control. The combination of marigolds and nasturtiums are unappealing to many pests.

Natural composts increase the health of plants for many creatures. Recycle garden waste such as lawn trimmings, leaves and wilting plants in a compost heap of your own. Compost heaps are easy to build, whether in the ground or a round bin.

Breaking down organic matter through a compost requires the materials to be turned daily. Fresh fruit and vegetable peels are a great way to start a composts. Meat and dairy can ruin a compost by producing bacteria and unwanted smells. Your compost heap should be moist, but not wet, and should contain some soil from your garden to introduce some of the microorganisms needed to break the matter down.

Remove invader species from your garden and use plants that are adaptable to the local environment. Indigenous plants save water because they are well suited to current climate conditions.

Watering alternatives like recycling systems or rainwater tanks reduce water bills. Close watch to the time can allow for an irrigation system to achieve.

It is not difficult to make the move to organic gardening, and certainly worth the effort. Introduce changes gradually to suit the time and money you have available. After setting up a successful organic garden, you can now own a vegetable garden.

Every garden could benefit from a water feature. An outdoor wall fountain takes an ordinary garden and transforms it into an oasis. It creates a place where you want to come and linger.

By selecting a wall fountain, you save a lot of space in your garden while still retaining the aesthetic benefits. A wall fountain even serves a dual purpose for some people. Pet owners may want to even use the fountain as a water bowl for their pet.

Outdoor water fountains are great accessories because they can set the scene for your garden. They come in a variety of styles which can complement your garden style. For example, if you enjoy exotic plants you may want a more bohemian style fountain. The gurgle of water is relaxing and it adds to the fragrance of the flowers and plants. It makes your garden complete.

Some outdoor water fountains are expensive but there are some for every price range. The cost usually depends on the size, stone it's constructed with. Premade fountains are usually cheaper than custom-made models.

A lot depends on what they are made of and what fountain design you choose. Often more simple designs and products make for quality fountains that will look good and save you money. Look for sales and you can get a good deal.

You might want to try going online and seeing what outdoor wall fountains are available. There may be more to choose from online, although in most cases, you will have to buy without seeing the fountain in person. Check to see if the store has a good return policy for peace of mind.

So, go online or to a garden store and see what strikes your fancy. There's bound to be one or more that will look right in your garden and be at a price you can afford.
Orchids are inexpensive and easy to grow. That is not the information about orchids that most people have. Unfortunately, because it is true. Just like with many other things, orchids have a price range. From the low end of about $30 for a healthy orchid, all the way up to $300 or more for some special, priced orchids. Even higher if you look at same rare types. If you are looking for cheap houseplants, don't get an orchid. However, if you want long lasting, spectacular blooms, you will have to pay a bit more for an orchid.

Taking care of orchids is not rocket science. It does require some knowledge. And the discipline to follow basic steps, and meet the specific and not difficult needs, as is described below:

1. Soil specifics: Orchids are best planted in bark, sphagnum moss or specific orchid soil that drains easily.

2. Temperature: Many orchids love temperature climates, which means temperatures between 55degF and 80degF (12C to 27C). Some orchids naturally grow in colder climates. this is important to know if you are planning on growing orchids in your garden.

3. Light requirements: The natural environment of orchids is tropical to high mountain. Orchids often grow in wooded areas, but still need a lot of light. Most of it however diffuse, or indirect. Direct sunlight will burn the leaves.

4. Water: Required every 5-8 days, depending on size of pot, type of orchid, temperature and humidity. Never water when the soil, moss or bark are wet. Too much water will kill your orchids.

5. Frequency of adding fertilizer: This is probably one of the trickiest parts. Orchids need specific fertilizers. The frequency and concentration however, varies with the seasons and the plants themselves.

6. Humidity requirements: Relative humidity levels of 40% or higher should be maintained. You can provide these levels, locally around your orchids by setting the pots on a water tray. This creates a micro-climate of higher humidity around the orchids as the water in the tray evaporates.

You can successfully grow orchids by following the above list. And before you can grow orchids, it would be helpful to first know about the different types.

Orchids have more types, or species, and variations than any other plant family: over 20,000 types and over 100,000 hybrid combinations. Orchids have the rare ability cross-breed with other types, often resulting in a stronger plant. Growers are constantly creating new combinations of color, leaf shapes or scents, by mixing and matching different orchids

There are two basic ways in which orchids grow. Epiphytic orchids grow "in the air", attached to tree trunks and branches. No, you will not need a tree in your living room. Growing epiphytic orchids in your home simply means that they are grown on bark-type material in special pots, instead of in soil. For these orchids it is important that air can circulate around the roots, as if the plants were living on a tree. Dendrobium and Phalaenopsis orchids are examples.

As the name implies, terrestrial orchids grow in soil. Not just any soil though. They need a well draining type of soil like sphagnum moss. The roots of terrestrial orchids are tuber like. From these, the plant grows leaves and flower stems, like fingers on a hand. Cymbidiums are of terrestrial orchids, as are the well know lady slippers.

Dendrobium and Phalaenopsis orchids are two of the easiest types of orchids to grow and great for beginners. Both types bloom profusely and for many weeks. You are prepared to successfully grow orchids, now that you have this orchid information at your fingertips.

We live in a day and age where the latest in technology has become available to a lot of people. Some even consider this world to be pretty much "maintenance free." Though manufacturers or suppliers may claim so, consider it to be good practice to clean your products to prevent possible disappointments in the future. This includes your aluminum flagpole.

No matter what climate you are in, aluminum flagpoles are pretty resistant to all kinds of elements. But just like with anything else that is subject to the elements, a good cleaning might be required every so often to prolong the life-span of your products.

Even though most aluminum flagpoles are considered corrosion free (for the most part), after months, if not years, oxidation of this metal type will lead to staining and pitting of your flagpole. Usually new flagpoles receive treatment to prevent such oxidation from happening. Worst case scenario really is that this oxidation process leads to rust.

A few simple actions on your end could prevent any such issues for the most part. Just like with any other item that remains "static" for a while, dust and dirt will start to collect. The removal of which can prevent problems down the road. Make sure to use a little bit of warm water in combination with a soap solution. Scrape when you find this to be absolutely necessary. Give you flag pole supplier a call to learn more on how to best clean you flagpole!

Whenever you find your flagpole being covered with "sticky" dirt, visit your local home maintenance expert and learn what solvents or treatments you can apply to "fix the job." The last thing you want happening is turning your (once) good looking pole into neighborhood "pollution."

Aluminum as a construction material was not used till the end of the 19th century. Aluminum was initially used by the Romans for taking care of wounds. It was not until the beginning of the second quarter of the 19th century that (impure) aluminum was first made. Ever since this event, various scientists were involved in the development of aluminum as a construction material.

Aluminum has been applied for the production of all kinds of flag poles for years using the industry's most sophisticated production technology. Transportation and installation of these lighter weight poles is more cost-effective than (for example) steel flagpoles.

Many people want to make use of landscaping to attract butterflies to their homes with a basic backyard and for good reason. Abundant amounts of butterflies make the backyard more attractive and the butterflies help the flowers in the backyard grow bigger by pollinating the plants. There are several things that a person can do to attract butterflies with a backyard landscaping idea and create an inviting place where butterflies love to roam.

Although different varieties of butterflies may be present in the location, most butterflies have the same needs. By providing the things that the butterflies need with the backyard landscaping idea, the butterflies will find the backyard a great place for them to live and multiply. A butterfly needs food, a place for their eggs, food for the caterpillars, and places to create their chrysalis. Even small backyard landscaping can provide these four basic needs for the butterflies and as long as they are not disturbed, the butterflies stay year after year.

Making The Backyard Attractive To Butterflies

Butterflies eat nectar and plants that have nectar butterflies like to eat have the best chance of attracting large quantities of butterflies. As a simple backyard landscaping idea, the person should place plants that are pightly colored in shades of red, orange, yellow, purple, or pink blossoms throughout the backyard. The person should also look for blossoms that are clustered together and blossoms with short tubes for holding nectar where the butterflies can get to it. These are the types of flowers that butterflies search for when looking for food.

The plants that provide butterflies with food should be planted in direct sunlight. Butterflies avoid eating in flowers that are located in shaded areas. When planning the backyard landscaping idea, the plants should be placed in areas where they can be covered by pight sunlight during the day. The plants that provide butterflies with the best food generally thrive in direct sunlight, so the plants will not be damaged by getting large amounts of sunlight each day.

Caterpillars will only eat certain types of food and eat constantly when in this stage. As a good backyard landscaping idea, the plants that caterpillars eat should be placed behind flowering plants to hide the damage that caterpillars cause to the plant. Eaten leaves are unattractive but hiding the plant behind plants that caterpillars don't eat provides a place for caterpillars to live while keeping the backyard looking attractive. By following these few tips to attract butterflies with a basic backyard landscaping idea, a beautiful backyard atmosphere will result that can be enjoyed for many years to come.
